DERA ISMAIL KHAN: A police constable was martyred when terrorists launched a late-night attack on Mulazai police station in Tank district, officials said on Tuesday.

According to the officials, armed assailants opened heavy and automatic gunfire on the police station from two sides on Monday night. Personnel deployed inside the premises retaliated, triggering an intense exchange of fire that continued for some time. Constable Jehanzaib, who was on duty at the time, was critically injured during the assault and embraced martyrdom, the official said.

Reinforcements were rushed to the area, and a search operation was launched to trace the attackers. The situation in the locality remained tense following the incident.

The attack comes against the backdrop of a recent uptick in terrorist violence targeting security forces in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Tank district, where incidents of gun attacks and improvised explosive device blasts have been reported in recent weeks. Funeral prayers for the slain constable were held at the Tank Police Lines with full state honour.

Floral wreaths were laid on the coffin, and a police contingent presented a guard of honour.

Special prayers were offered for the elevation of the martyr’s ranks and for peace and stability in the district.

Meanwhile, a Frontier Corps soldier was killed when armed rivals opened fire on him and his relatives in Wanda Mir Alam village here on Tuesday, police said, describing the incident as a fallout of a longstanding murder feud.

According to an FIR registered at Gloti police station, a complainant, Ahmed Hassan Sheikh, 55, said he along with his nephews, Barkatullah and FC soldier Ali Jan, was heading to Wanda Abu area.

He alleged that when they reached near the house of Jamshed Khan alias Khan Sheikh, he flashed a light on them from a fortified position at his residence and asked his brother, Jahanzeb, to open fire. The two brothers then allegedly fired at them with their weapons, the complainant said.

He said Ali Jan, who was on leave from his posting in North Balochistan, was hit by a bullet and died on the spot.

Police said a case had been registered under sections relating to murder and attempted murder, and efforts were under way to arrest the suspects.
