RAWALPINDI: Letters were distributed among selected farmers for the provision of a subsidy aimed at promoting ginger cultivation under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s Agriculture Transformation Plan for the Potohar region.

Punjab Agriculture Research Director General Dr Sajidur Rehman was chief guest at a ceremony held to hand over letters to the selected farmers.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rehman said the chief minister had introduced the agricultural transformation plan worth Rs7 billion for the Potohar region.

Under the plan, a programme has also been introduced to promote ginger cultivation. Subsidies will be given to promote ginger cultivation on 100 acres in three years.

“Subsidy is being given to 10 selected farmers in the first year. Under this programme, a subsidy of Rs3.29 million per acre is being given. This includes subsidies on high-quality ginger seeds, tunnel structures, drip irrigation systems and solar,” he said. Ginger is a cash crop whose profits are much higher than traditional crops, he added.

“Pakistan spends a huge amount on importing ginger every year. This programme will help in promoting ginger cultivation,” he said. Vegetable Research Faisalabad Director Dr Mohammad Iqbal said the institute was providing practical training to farmers in ginger cultivation. He said special training will be given to selected farmers under this programme.

Aamir Latif, principal scientist, Vegetable Research Institute, said the climate of Potohar region was very favourable for ginger cultivation. Therefore, farmers of the region should come towards ginger cultivation.
