ISLAMABAD: City managers on Wednesday directed an early feasibility study for the electric tram project in Islamabad, while also deliberating on development work in several new residential sectors.
A meeting chaired by CDA chief Muhammad Ali Randhawa, attended by CDA Board Member Admin Talat Mahmood, Member Planning and Design Dr Khalid Hafiz, Member Finance Tahir Naeem, Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon and other senior CDA officers, discussed the implementation and infrastructure of the electric tram and electric bus projects.
“It was decided in the meeting to conduct a feasibility study for the electric tram project in Islamabad at the earliest,” read a press release issued by the CDA after the meeting. It stated that under the electric tram project, modern facilities, including a depot, parking, charging infrastructure and maintenance facilities, will be established for the trams. “The project will be implemented in accordance with a modern Intelligent Transport System (ITS). It will be a fully modern, comfortable, and environmentally friendly initiative based on contemporary standards. The project will be integrated with Islamabad’s modern transit system.”
Chairman CDA said that the feasibility study should focus on connecting the electric tram project with important locations in the federal capital, particularly the Islamabad International Airport. He added that the latest ridership data and future demand should be considered in planning.
Meanwhile, in another meeting chaired by the CDA chief, progress regarding the development of new sectors was reviewed. The meeting was informed that basic infrastructure work in Sector C-14 has entered its final stages and that the process of handing over plot possession will commence soon.
Chairman CDA directed that signboards displaying plot and street numbers be installed to ensure the convenience of plot owners. He also instructed that information for all plots in Sector C-14 be made available on the e-map.
While briefing the chairman on development progress in Sector I-12, officials said that almost all residential and commercial plots have entered the final stages of development. Chairman CDA Muhammad Ali Randhawa emphasized that all basic infrastructure facilities, including e-maps, signboards and streetlights, should be fully in place.
The meeting also reviewed progress in Sector E-12. Officials reported that basic infrastructure work in Sub-sectors 1 and 2 has entered its final stages, while development in Sub-sector 3 is ongoing, and tenders for Sub-sector 4 will be issued soon after resolving existing obstacles.
Chairman CDA directed that the handing over of developed plots in Sector E-12 be expedited and stressed the complete removal of illegal constructions and encroachments in the sector.
