SUKKUR: The rehabilitation project will boost the lifespan of Sukkur Barrage and help reduce water shortages.

This was stated by Sindh Minister Irrigation Jam Khan Shoro during a high-level visit conducted on Sunday to review the progress of the rehabilitation and upgradation project at Sukkur Barrage.

The minister was accompanied by Sindh Irrigation Secretary Zarif Iqbal Khero, Project Director Mr Pritam Das and chief engineers of the irrigation department.

The secretary briefed the minister that the floor of the barrage had been exposed after 100 years of its construction.

In the last season, some gates, including the trail run gate, had been replaced, he was told.

In Phase-2, 27 gates would be replaced. All the civil works were being carried out, including recoupment of stone apron, strengthening of pavement, grouting of peers and repointing, replacement of settling blocks.

Officials say completion of project will help overcome water shortage across the barrage-fed areas

In mechanical works, total 56 operational gates would be replaced up to June 2027, including replacement of embedded parts and installation of the new latest hoisting system.

After the visit of the site, Minister Irrigation Mr Jam Khan Shoro, Secretary Irrigation Mr Zarif Iqbal Khero held a press conference and briefed about the benefits of the project.

The minister said that after successful completion of the mega project of Sukkur Barrage, the life line of the barrage would be increased and the command area of the barrage would get benefits and shortage of water would decrease.

After the media briefing, the minister and secretary irrigation held a meeting with the Chinese contractor.
