ISLAMABAD: Prominent writer and columnist Humayun Gauhar passed away at a private medical facility in the capital on Tuesday. He was 76.

Family sources told Dawn that the columnist was admitted to Ali Medical Centre about a month ago after he was diagnosed with pneumonia. He was later shifted to the ICU where he breathed his last, leaving behind a widow, son and three daughters.

His funeral will take place at house number 16, Street 1, Sector F-7/3, Islamabad today after Asr at 4pm while the ‘Soyem’ would be held on Friday between Asr and Maghrib prayers. Mr Gauhar was born on April 13, 1949, in Karachi. He worked as a columnist for The Nation, Pakistan Today, as well as being the editor of Blue Chip magazine. He also established the South magazine, and was its managing director and publisher.

He was also reportedly involved in editing former president Gen Pervez Musharraf’s 2006 memoir, In the Line of Fire.

He was the son of Altaf Gauhar, who had served as the editor of Dawn in the 1970s, and was also a member of Field Marshal Ayub Khan’s cabinet as the information minister.
