This year has been full of superhero reboots — like Superman and the brand-new Fantastic Four — but Jurassic World: Rebirth brings the dinosaurs back in a whole new way. Directed by Gareth Edwards and written by the original Jurassic Park writer David Koepp, this movie tells a fresh, exciting story with new characters, leaving behind the old memories to make something fun and different for today’s fans.
Gareth, who was also behind the reboot of the Godzilla franchise in 2014, has a more straightforward, tighter narrative for his first Jurassic World film. A corporation hires mercenaries — Zora (Scarlett Johansson) and Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) — to collect blood samples from three rare dinosaurs (sea, land, air) on a remote island, purportedly for a heartdisease cure. This means the adventure takes us to the sea, land and sky, with the team chasing dinosaurs as if they were playful dolphins. However, the dinosaurs were not in a playful mood.
The actors all do a great job. Scarlett Johansson, who is best known for playing Black Widow, portrays a brave and tough hero named Zora. Mahershala Ali brings quiet emotion to his role, Rupert Friend plays the villain with a cold and serious demeanour, and Jonathan Bailey, who plays Dr Loomis, is a delight to watch and often steals the spotlight. The family that gets rescued during the adventure sometimes slows things down and doesn’t always feel like an essential part of the story.
Jurassic World: Rebirth is one of the best-looking dinosaur movies since the original Jurassic Park. The movie features many of the things fans love: wild jungle adventures, big dinosaur chases and thought-provoking scientific questions about right and wrong. What it does best is bring back the fun and wonder of the Jurassic world with better storytelling than some of the last movies. It’s not the same as the classic Jurassic Park, but it’s still a fun and exciting reboot that shows the series can continue to thrive.
The camera showcases stunning jungles and thrilling chase scenes. The dinosaurs look cool and new, even if they’re not always super scary. Usually, just hearing a T. Rex would make your heart race, but in this movie, the sounds are loud and powerful — more fun than frightening.
In the end, Jurassic World: Rebirth may not change everything, but it’s a fun surprise and a great dino adventure for fans old and new!
