We have all seen science fiction movies in which robots get out of control and destroy the world. Now what if this doesn’t just happen in the movies, but in reality?
Well we have already witnessed AI instigating into and almost replacing everything, so what if it gets so real that becomes the reality of tomorrow?
Some of you may roll your eyes, but think about it. How often, when you get stuck on a math problem or an essay, do you automatically reach for various AI software to correct you? Because why would anyone spend hours on their assignments when AI can do it for you in literally seconds and earn you a much higher grade? My dear friends, don’t you see this is where the actual problem lies?
So it’s not wrong to say that AI did it and not you! That grade is not yours because you did not put in the effort required to attain those marks, because AI did it. What is scarier is the fact that humans are leaving behind their originality and hard work is being diminished day by day.
If you compare the art of the Renaissance with modern art, there is a glaring difference. The old paintings have meticulous detail and paint a vivid scene. However today, you can just slap a dot on a canvas and sell it for thousands of dollars. And what about the stunning architecture of the mosques, castles and temples from the old times? The intricate patterns are being eradicated in modern buildings under the guise of minimalism.
Authors, artists, designers, developers all are becoming more dependent on AI. True, it produces results within seconds, but there’s no emotion, sense or effort behind the work.
Think of the recent craze of asking AI to turn photographs into Studio Ghibli style ones. The original producers spend hours on hand-drawn illustrations and now all their effort is being disrespected and disregarded by a machine.
Moreover, what about jobs? While it’s true that the rise of technology has created thousands of jobs, such as AI engineers, trainers and monitors, it has led almost an equal amount of people out of their jobs. The World Economic Forum’s “Future of Jobs Report” predicts that AI will create 170 million new jobs while eliminating 92 million, resulting in a net increase of 78 million jobs by 2030. This indicates that AI will not only create new roles, but also transform existing ones, requiring workers to adapt and acquire new skills.
While this seems promising, remember that educated people are required to handle technology. This level of education and training is virtually out of the question for those at the bottom of the social ladder. Such as, cashiers, builders, cleaners, movers are mostly illiterate or with just basic education, who rely on straightforward physical work to sustain themselves and their household. They will be laid off and their jobs replaced by robots! While more efficient and cost-friendly for the company, is it really justified when the struggles of the poor and jobless are taken into view?
How far can this go? Can AI replace everything? The answer is no. I firmly believe no.
AI can not rule in a world designed for creatures with beating hearts and a myriad of emotions. AI is incapable of thinking outside the box, of coming up with ideas so mind-boggling that they pave the way for inventions. But it cannot mimic the love and care humans give to each other; it cannot reach out to lend a helping hand to a soul in need, to empathise and offer counsel.
The structure of society heavily depends on feelings. In addition, it cannot evaluate the needs and personalities of individuals, cannot read the emotions of a face. These traits that make us human are precisely what bring colour to our world. What makes society resemble a kaleidoscope of infinite patterns.
So the next time you reach for AI’s assistance, pause for a moment. Instead, unleash the power of your brain and you will be surprised by what you can accomplish.
