KARACHI: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon on Monday reviewed the progress, performance, and technical issues surrounding the Safe City project and associated surveillance initiatives.

A meeting held at the Central Police Office was informed that 542 cameras had been installed across Karachi, generating real-time alerts. Twelve emergency response vehicles and nearly 300 policemen have also been deployed to enhance response capabilities.

The meeting was attended by officials from the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee, the Safe City project leadership and other senior officers.

Multiple departments including traffic, highway patrol, and IT presented separate briefings during the session.

Their briefings highlighted that alerts are effectively helping intercept vehicles with fake number plates, though some delays in alert generation and dispatch have been noted during testing phases. The Safe City administration is working to resolve these technical lags.

The DIG-Traffic reported the introduction of an e-challan system, now being integrated with the Safe City network, and a proposal has been sent to the Sindh government for increasing fines for traffic violations.

The IGP reiterated that the provincial government seeks immediate implementation of Safe City and related projects.

He formed two committees to address alert system improvements and data management, and to oversee deployment planning and response mechanisms.
