Veteran religious, political leader Murtaza Pooya passes away

ISLAMABAD: Renowned political thinker, religious scholar, and founder of an English language daily, Agha Murtaza Pooya, passed away in Karachi on Friday after a prolonged illness.

Agha Murtaza Pooya was the founding editor of The Muslim since its launch in 1979. He was known for his intellectual depth and active role in public affairs, particularly during critical junctures of Pakistan’s political history.

He had been a federal minister and also headed a public sector Islamabad-based think-tank. He later also became the Senior Vice President of Pakistan Awami Tehreek. His body was brought to Islamabad and his funeral prayers were held on Friday at noon at Imambargah Sadiq G-9 in Islamabad.

One of the editors of the Muslim, Maleeha Lodhi, in her condolence message at X said, “Saddened to hear Agha Murtaza Pooya has passed away. He established The Muslim newspaper that became the voice of resistance during Gen Zia’s martial law & made stellar contributions to journalism in Pakistan.”

The late Agha Murtaza Poya will be remembered for his efforts for promotion of freedom of expression in the country and struggle for democracy. Those who know him laud his valuable services for promoting harmony among different sects and fostering interfaith unity in Pakistani society.

Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has expressed deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences over the demise of Agha Murtaza Poya.

In his condolence message, he extended heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the family of the late Agha Murtaza Pooya. He prayed that Almighty Allah give the bereaved family strength to bear this great loss and grant the departed soul forgiveness and the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous.
