Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League is a must-watch if you are a fan of superheroes, samurai, ninjas, and time-travelling animated adventures. A sequel to Batman Ninja (2018), this film takes the action and style to an entirely new level. While the original featured Batman’s foes in feudal Japan, this time the Bat-clan is battling none other than his friends, the Justice League, in a gritty, Yakuza-style world.
The story picks up right after the events of the first film. Batman and his team — Nightwing, Red Hood, Red Robin, and Robin — return from Japan, only to discover that the entire island of Japan no longer exists and the Justice League is missing. It does not take long before Batman learns the shocking truth: Ra’s al Ghul has corrupted Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Aquaman.
We have always heard that Batman was the most ‘brainy’ of the Justice League; this 89-minute movie is the proof. Batman uses his ninja training and cool gadgets to outsmart the Yakuza League. The fight between Batman and a mind-controlled Superman is especially intense, reminding us of the epic showdown from Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. With the setting in Japan, it was easier to show sword fights and ninja battles, along with high-speed chases across rooftops and action. This time, Batman battles far from Gotham — yet he’s just as formidable.
Set in a darker, more modern Tokyo, the story weaves in elements of Japanese culture through samurai traditions, honour codes, and stylish calligraphy that punctuates key scenes.
The film also delivers some genuinely touching moments. The bond between Batman and his team highlights the importance of loyalty and teamwork, even in the face of overwhelming odds. Unlike the previous instalment’s feudal setting, this sequel shifts into a Yakuza-influenced world, blending gritty crime drama with superhero action and anime-inspired flair.
While Junpei Mizusaki returns as director, he’s joined by co-director Shinji Tagaki, a renowned animator in his own right, bringing fresh energy to the visual storytelling.
Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League raises the stakes with a bold new direction, blending superhero action with Yakuza drama and anime flair. It’s a visually stunning sequel that pits Batman against his allies in a twisted moral showdown. There is no point in guessing whether Batman succeeds; we all know what could have happened when the world’s best detective takes up a case.
