DERA GHAZI KHAN: Sanitary workers associated with the Suthra Punjab project have been dumping garbage in open spaces instead of properly disposing it of in designated landfill sites, posing serious risks to both the environment and public health across the Dera Ghazi Khan division.

Despite the project’s multi-billion-rupee scale and its implementation in all districts of the division, the failure to follow proper waste disposal methods is undermining its objectives.

In Chak Birmani — a village near the foothills of the Sulaiman Range in an arid zone — the transformation of the landscape through solar-powered water pumps has revived once-abandoned areas. Residents have begun returning, and previously barren lands are now turning green. However, the irresponsible dumping of waste is threatening these gains. The region’s frequent strong winds are scattering trash across cultivated fields, degrading soil quality and creating health hazards for the local population.

Dr Abbas, a representative of the farmers in Chak Birmani, has appealed to the deputy commissioner of Dera Ghazi Khan to take immediate notice of the situation. He urged the authorities to ensure that sanitary workers follow the project’s standard operating procedures (SOPs) and adhere to proper waste disposal protocols.

Similar complaints have surfaced in other districts of the division, especially in rural areas, where SOPs are reportedly not being followed by Suthra Punjab’s sanitation staff.
