LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department has imposed Section 144 across the province until Oct 15 in view of serious threats to public peace, tranquillity and the safety of life and property.

According to a notification issued by the home department, a complete ban has been imposed on assemblies, processions and gatherings of five or more persons at public places, roads and open spaces. The carrying and display of all kinds of weapons at public places has also been prohibited.

The notification further prohibits inciting or encouraging people to participate in unlawful assemblies.

According to the home department spokesperson, the restrictions imposed under Section 144 will not apply to wedding ceremonies, funeral prayers, burials, mosques and other places of worship. Courts, government institutions and duly authorised events will also remain exempt from the restrictions. The curbs will likewise not apply to personnel of law enforcement agencies, intelligence agencies and security agencies while performing official duties.

As per the notification, law enforcement and intelligence agencies have received alerts regarding imminent threats. Intelligence reports indicate that terrorist organisations are planning to target public gatherings, making assemblies, rallies, public meetings, sit-ins, processions and demonstrations potential and easy targets for terrorist attacks. Law enforcement agencies have requested immediate preventive measures to address the potential threat of terrorism and ensure effective maintenance of law and order.

In view of these security concerns, the home secretary has imposed an immediate ban on public gatherings under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898.
