Man may face jail in a bid to collect all periodic table elements
An Australian man, Emmanuel Lidden, faces up to 10 years in prison for attempting to collect all the elements in the periodic table, including ordering plutonium online.
In August 2023, Lidden, 24, was arrested after a major operation by Australian Border Force and other agencies. He pleaded guilty to violating nuclear non-proliferation laws. Lidden’s lawyer argues that he is simply a “science nerd” and that his actions were out of naivety, not malicious intent. However, prosecutors claim his illegal purchase created a market for dangerous materials. Lidden’s charges could lead to a lengthy prison sentence.
Zero-calorie flavoured bamboo skewers
A Chinese barbecue restaurant in Shaoyang, Hunan Province, has gone viral for selling seasoned bamboo skewers as a zero-calorie snack. The ‘Spicy Bamboo Skewers’ are coated with spices, chilli and spring onions, then lightly smoked on the grill. Customers don’t eat the skewers, but suck the flavour off, offering a guilt-free way to enjoy a barbecue.
Created by restaurant owner Mr Ma, the snack was designed for weight-conscious customers. Initially a gimmick, it has gained massive popularity, with hundreds of daily orders. Each batch of 50 skewers costs just 10 yuan ($1.4)!
Wavy traffic lines to slow down motorists
Montgomery Township, Pennsylvania, has introduced wavy lane patterns on some street to slow down traffic. The zig-zag lines are part of a “traffic-calming” strategy to enhance safety.
Speed bumps were considered, but ruled out due to the street’s steep gradient and police enforcement wasn’t always effective.
However, the unusual lane patterns have sparked mixed reactions, with some motorists expressing confusion and disbelief. To help drivers adjust, traffic cones and signs have been installed, though many still find the new layout surprising.
Man evicted for keeping pet buffalo calf
A Chinese man, Mr Chen, has been evicted twice this year from rented apartments due to his unusual pet, a buffalo calf named Bull Demon King.
The 30-year-old retired boxer from Foshan originally planned to get a dog ,but chose the calf for its symbolism of hard work without being overworked.
Despite the evictions, Chen remains attached to his pet, claiming it has a gentle nature, though it can be noisy when hungry. Chen has defended his choice, stating he genuinely loves the animal and is currently looking for a new place to rent. His story has gone viral on social media, with some criticising his decision while others admire his dedication.
