An unjust act

Published April 29, 2025

I AM an assistant professor at a renowned institution in Karachi, and was hired last year. Recently, the federal government removed the 25 per cent rebate on salary deduction of full-time teachers as well as researchers employed in recognised non-profit educational and research institutions.

A bill was presented in parliament, but the approved version did not mention the specific portion of the bill. Due to this drastic step, the relief remains unavailable to many teachers and researchers.

Our bureaucrats and parliamentarians continue to enjoy their lofty perks and benefits along with their mighty salaries, but those investing their time and energy on building the country’s future remain deprived of even a minor relief. How is that justified?

If justice is not done immediately, faculty members and researchers will have to explore their chances in other professions. The government should address the matter without any delay.
