ISLAMABAD: After a gap of almost eight months, the federal government on Thursday appointed the chairman and two members of the Competition Appellate Tribunal (CAT).

Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, a former judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, was appointed CAT chairman.

Dr Faiz Elahi Memon and Asim Akram were appointed tribunal members, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice.

The CAT is a specialised forum that handles appeals against the decisions of the Competition Commission of Pakistan.

In November 2023, the federal government appointed former chief justice of the Peshawar High Court Mazhar Alam Miankhel as the tribunal chairman.

However, following his appointment as an ad hoc judge in the Supreme Court in June 2024, the tribunal again became inactive.

The tribunal was established under Section 43 of the Competition Act 2010, and comprises a chairperson and two technical members.
