Saudi Arabia’s Al Arabiya TV reports that Egypt rejects Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid’s call for it to administer the Gaza Strip for eight years once the conflict ends, Al Jazeera reports.

Egyptian sources told the channel that Palestinians should be the ones to run Gaza and that the war-battered enclave must be rebuilt without the forced displacement of its residents.

Earlier, Lapid presented a plan for post-comflict Gaza in Washington, DC, saying Egypt should run the Strip in exchange for massive debt relief.

“The solution is Egypt will take responsibility for the management of the Gaza Strip for eight years with an option to extend to 15 years,” he told the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) think tank.

“At the same time, its foreign external debt will be paid off by the international community and regional allies,” he said.
