As the golden sun rays poured onto my face through the slight gap in the curtains, I knew it was already morning. I yawned, stretched and slowly moved toward the curtains. As I peeked outside, I was greeted by a clear blue sky. There was a fresh feel in the air — the brightness, the colours — everything felt different.

I slid on my slippers and walked into the garden. The entire atmosphere was so inviting. Birds fluttered around and a pleasant breeze carried the scent of blooming flowers. I noticed that the trees had shed their old leaves, making way for new ones and the grass looked greener than ever; I took off my slippers to feel its texture. It was as if a soft, lush green carpet had been laid beneath my feet.

My attention was drawn to the sweet twittering of birds from the tree behind me. Looking closer, I spotted a pair of sparrows perched on a bough, occupying a newly built nest made of twigs and leaves.

I strolled toward a nearby neem tree and sat beneath its cool shade, feeling immense peace as I gazed at the white clouds drifting across the sky. I was mesmerised by this splendid sight, unable to resist acknowledging the wonders of this season.

How truly it was said “Spring is nature’s way of saying let’s party.”

Dear readers, did you know that in old English, spring was called Lent? It was in the 14th century that it came to be called springing time, referring to the period when new shrubs and plants sprout from the ground. Later, it was shortened to springtime, and finally, it became simply spring.

Depending on the hemisphere, spring falls between winter and summer. In our part of the world, it begins in mid-February and lasts until April. If you are a curious soul drawn to nature, you’ve probably noticed its subtle signs: the gradual rise in temperature causing snow to melt in the northern regions, the sun’s rays growing warmer, the days becoming longer while the nights shorten, and the emergence of vibrant flowers and green shoots from the earth.

Some lesser-noticed, but equally fascinating, signs include the return of migrating birds and the awakening of insects and animals from hibernation. All these changes are nature’s way of announcing that spring has arrived.

The delightful treats

Of course, with spring comes the beauty of flowers blooming all around, which is why several flower shows are organised during this season. But it’s not just about flowers — spring also brings us a wide array of delicious fruits in vibrant colours, such as pineapples, strawberries, avocados, apricots, grapefruits, lemons and cherries.

And did you know that this is the perfect season for planting vegetables like tomatoes, spring onions, lettuce, beetroot, carrots and radishes? So, whether you have a kitchen garden, a small patio or even a windowsill, spring is the perfect time to roll up your sleeves and work your magic in the garden!

The outdoors’ calling

Spring is also the perfect time to have some fun and plan leisurely outdoor activities, because it’s neither too hot nor too cold — just pleasantly refreshing. From refreshing morning strolls, picnics by the beach, kite flying, nature walks, hiking, fishing to having get-togethers outside.

Well-being is at its peak

Research suggests that one of the most remarkable blessings of this season is its positive impact on both physical and mental health. Studies have shown that the arrival of spring instils feelings of joy, happiness, optimism and energy.

The wonders of spring also manifest in the form of a healthier environment that we all eagerly anticipate. Clean, fresh air with high oxygen levels and abundant sunshine enhances cognitive abilities, boosts vitamin D levels and improves overall well-being. Additionally, by incorporating the season’s fresh fruits and vegetables into our diet, we can further enrich our health and nutrition.

A time for festivities

The advent of spring fills the air with excitement, uniting people of all creeds, nationalities, cultures and professions in shared joy. For a farmer, it is a time of celebration, for his heart swells with happiness as he sees his rabi crops, sown in winter, now ready for harvest.

Numerous religious and cultural festivals are among the highlights of this season. For example, Basant, Holi and Easter all share the common theme of happiness and jubilation.

Spring and its impact on you

Every season brings with it something unique and a message to live life accordingly. So when spring arrives, take a moment to reflect on the message it carries — vibrancy, rebirth and energy.

Yes, we need all of these to live a life full of growth, hope and renewal. So, step into the season with a heart full of optimism, a mind open to new possibilities, and a spirit ready to bloom!
