Football tourney concludes in GB on a high note

GILGIT: The First Force Command Northern Areas (FCNA) Inter-District GB Football Championship concluded in Gilgit city on Saturday amid fanfare.

Thousands of spectators witnessed the closing ceremony and final match of the week-long football championship at Lalik Jan Stadium in Jutial Gilgit.

The event was first of its kind in Gilgit Baltistan (GB), in which 15 teams from all the districts of the mountainous region participated alongside four teams from government departments.

In the final match of the championship, Gilgit defeated Ghizer by 2-1, sealing a decisive victory.

A large number of spectators watched the matches with enthusiasm and rooted for their favourite players.

The closing ceremony of the event was attended by Force Command Northern Areas (FCNA) Major General Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gillani, GB Chief Secretary Abrar Ahmad Mirza, various government, social and military officials.

Spectators said football was the favourite sport in GB, but somehow, it was not given the recognition it deserved.

They said the event not only promoted local talent but also provided a conduccive environment for locals to enjoy during harsh weather in the region.

They stressed the need to organise more competitions to promote sports activities in GB.

“This tournament stands as a testament to the fact that our area has immense football talent, and if channelised properly, local players can earn a name for themselves and the country in the international arena.

At the end of the closing ceremony, FCNA Commander Major General Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gillani distributed trophies, gifts and medels among players.
