BAHAWALPUR: Two suspects allegedly involved in scores of heinous crimes, including dacoities and wanted by police of different districts, were killed in “the firing by their own accomplices” during an encounter in the limits ofMusafir Khana police station, about 40kms from here on Friday morning.

According to a police spokesman, a police party was taking the suspects, Munir alias Munni and Shehbaz alias Rani, to a place for recovery of looted items, when their five accomplices allegedly opened fire on the policemen to free them.

He said this led to an exchange of fire between the police and attackers and when the firing stopped, both suspects were found dead.

The police claimed that the suspects were killed in the firing by their own accomplices, who managed to flee under the cover of darkness.

They said that Munir and Shehbaz were wanted in 67 and 40 criminal cases, respectively.

The police shifted the bodies to hospital for the postmortem examination and registered a case against their fleeing accomplices.

IUB BUDGET: The 87th meeting of the Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) syndicate chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Kamran approved the deficit budget for 2024-25 here Friday.

According to IUB public relationsdirector, the university will have a total income of Rs7,821 million from its resources against an expenditure of Rs8,013 million.

The budget was approved on the recommendations of three meetings of the IUB’S finance and planning committee.

He told Dawn that the IUB would not be able to continue its annual development programme because of financial constraints, and instead will ensure the timely payment of the salaries of its teaching and other staff during the year.

He said that the varsity’s salary expenditures stood at Rs5527.622m during the current financial year, while the deferred liabilities carried forward to the next financial year will be Rs1997.743m.

TWO DIE: A man and his son died when a speeding car hit their motorcycle at the intersection of Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park, Bahawalpur near the city today.

The deceased were identified as Aslam (65) and his son Imran (30).

The unidentified car driver managed to flee before police reached the scene.

After registration of a case against the driver the police launched a hunt for him.

OBITUARY: Sheikhul Hadit of Darul Aloom Madnia and Wafaqul Madaris office-bearer Mufti Ataur Rehman died here on Friday. He was 79.

His funeral prayers were attended by a large number of people, including ulema, seminaries’ students and local politicians.

He was laid to rest in the local graveyard.
