ISLAMABAD: German Ambassador Alfred Grannas on Thursday said a free press was a precondition for a thriving democracy.

Participating in a panel discussion on “Media Freedom and Democracy - Challenges and Opportunities” he said thatwas why, for instance, they offered journalists from all over the world additional training courses with the DW Academy, both in Germany and online.

The discussion was hosted by the German and Dutch embassies in Islamabad, drawing together journalists, diplomats, and community members for an open dialogue on the critical role of media in shaping democratic societies. Both embassies were members of the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC).

During the event, representatives from both countries stressed the importance of a free press in fostering informed societies and strengthening democratic values. Hajo Provo Kluit, Charge d’affaires of the Netherlands Embassy, echoed these sentiments, emphasising the importance of supporting journalism at all levels. “That is why the Netherlands supports a three-year project of the NGO Free Press Unlimited, helping rural journalists in Pakistan enhance their role as accountability advocates,” he noted.

Moderated by journalist and anchor Munizae Jahangir, the panel featured Pakistani journalists Ziaur Rehman, senior correspondent at The News International, and Maria Memon, news anchor from ARY News.

They discussed various challenges faced by journalists in Pakistan, ranging from censorship and safety concerns to the growing influence of digital media in promoting transparency.

The event underscored the commitment of both Germany and the Netherlands to upholding media freedom as a cornerstone of democracy. The discusants acknowledged ongoing challenges while also highlighting opportunities for collaboration and growth within the country’s media landscape.
