LAHORE: Participants in an international seminar stressed the need for adopting urban horticulture for food security.

Punjab University Faculty of Agricultural Sciences’ Department of Horticulture organised the seminar on urban horticulture on its premises on Saturday.

PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali Shah, Erik Arthur van Os and Christianus Petrus from Netherlands, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences Dean Prof Saleem Haider, Spurt International co-founder Malik Mohsin Shahzad, faculty members and students were present.

Prof Shah stressed the need for remaining committed to advancing research, promoting innovation in urban horticulture and enhancing food security for a sustainable future.

He said the seminar provided an excellent platform for knowledge exchange; collaboration and development of sustainable solutions that can help shape the future of our cities.

He expressed the hope that insights and discussions in this event would contribute significantly in building greener and more sustainable urban environment.

Prof Hadier said leaders, researchers and experts had discussed innovative solutions for urban horticulture and also addressed the increasing demand for sustainable green spaces in rapidly urbanising cities.

He said they focused on the crucial role of horticulture in shaping a greener and more sustainable future tackling issues such as food security, environmental conservation and climate resilience in urban landscapes.

He said since the cities around the globe continued to expand, there was a need for innovative and sustainable approaches to green urban spaces.

He said urban horticulture would not only provide avenues for environmental sustainability but also would play a pivotal role in combating the challenges posed by climate change and urbanisation.
