Iran is not looking to escalate regional tensions but believes it needs to punish Israel to prevent further instability, the country’s foreign ministry spokesperson has said, Reuters reports.
The statement comes days after the assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, which Iran and multiple Middle Eastern countries held Israel responsible for. Israel has neither commented on nor denied the accusation.
