ISLAMABAD: The US government has awarded 108 Pakistani undergraduate students scholarships for one semester in the 2024-25 academic year under the Global Undergraduate Exchange (Global UGRAD) Programme.

Administered by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), the exchange programme provides participants an opportunity to enrich their education by spending one semester of non-degree study at a US university or college, said a press release.

This unique opportunity enriches the students’ education, foster cross-cultural understanding and become community leaders. This immersive experience will enable them to learn about the American higher education system and actively engage in community projects, contributing positively to the host communities while developing their leadership skills.

US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald A. Blome shared well wishes with 54 of the students as they prepared to embark on their semester exchange this Fall.

“The United States has a long tradition of embracing international students and the unique perspectives they bring to a classroom. I am sure that each of you will represent your nation with honour and dignity and return home to Pakistan with new ideas and skills. I am proud that the United States can play a role in advancing your education,” said the ambassador.

The USEFP organised a two-day pre-departure orientation for the participants in Islamabad to prepare them for their upcoming exchange experiences in the United States. The Fall 2024 cohort hails from all regions of Pakistan and represents a diversity of cultures and fields of study.

“We are proud of each one of you for securing the Global UGRAD Scholarship to spend a semester in the United States,” noted USEFP Executive Director Rita Akhtar at the pre-departure orientation, adding: “This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Pakistani culture, learn from your American and international peers, and make the most of your exchange experience. We encourage you to immerse yourselves fully in this opportunity and return with a wealth of knowledge and unforgettable memories.”

The Global UGRAD Pakistan Programme is funded by the US government and was launched in 2010 to enhance Pakistani students’ community engagement abilities, commitment to service and leadership skills. Since then, more than 2,500 students have benefitted from the programme. These alumni, now serving in various fields, are uplifting their communities and gaining worldwide recognition for their work, which is a testament to the programme’s impact.

The USEFP is a bi-national commission established in 1950 by the US and Pakistan governments. Its mission is to promote understanding between the peoples of Pakistan and the US through educational and cultural exchange programmes.
