LAHORE: As heatwave grips the region, Punjab Minister for School Education Rana Sikandar Hayat on Monday announced an early start of summer vacation for all public and private schools across the province.

In a move that prioritises students safety and comfort, vacation will commence from May 25.

The decision came after a significant public consultation process initiated by the minister on social media. Over 7,000 responses were recorded, with a staggering 96 per cent of participants advocating for an immediate break to shield children from the scorching heat.

“Ensuring the well-being of our students is paramount,” stated Mr Hayat.

“We have taken a proactive approach by adjusting the academic calendar and making accommodations for ongoing examinations in private schools.”The School Education Department (SED) notification available with Dawn stated that in view of the surge in temperature and heat wave in the province, all public and private schools shall remain closed for seven days with effect from May 25 to 31.

Last week, the Punjab government had announced summer vacation in all public and private schools of the province from June 1 to Aug 14.

On Monday, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) also issued a heat wave advisory to the health department.
