KARACHI: Highlighting the role healthcare providers play in shaping economies and environmental sustainability, speakers at an international conference held in connection with the International Nurses and Midwives Day on Wednesday underscored the need for recognising and supporting the contributions of nurses and midwives in building resilient healthcare systems.

Titled Economy and Environment: Impact through Nursing and Midwifery Care, the conference was hosted by the Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery (AKU-SONAM) in collaboration with the hospital’s division for nursing services.

Speaking as the chief guest, Universities and Boards Secretary Noor Ahmed Samoo commended AKU-SONAM for becoming a role model in the fields of nursing and midwifery in the country.

“As Pakistan’s first private institution to establish a School of Nursing and Midwifery, the AKU-SONAM faculty has made significant contributions in the field through its outstanding academic services, research work and awareness programmes,” he said.

Citing the WHO data, he said there were 15 million vacancies globally for healthcare workers and so they could have a huge impact on the economy worldwide.

Chief Executive Officer AKUH Dr Farhat Abbas shared insights into the economic dimensions of nursing and midwifery care, stressing their role in driving positive healthcare outcomes and economic growth.

Chief Nursing Officer at AKUH Khairunnissa Hooda spoke about nurses’ contributions in patient care, hospital management and healthcare system sustainability.

“Their efforts and commitment to excellence are instrumental in leading best practices for a healthier future for all in Pakistan,” noted Ms Hooda.

Dr Tazeen Saeed Ali, Interim Dean of AKU-SONAM, emphasised the importance of nursing and midwifery education in fostering a sustainable healthcare workforce and addressing environmental challenges.
