KARACHI: New one-rupee currency notes with different colour and design will come into circulation from next week, official sources said yesterday [May 6]. They said the one-rupee notes, currently in circulation, will continue to remain legal tender along with the new notes. … It has also been decided to introduce new currency notes of 10-rupee and 100-rupee denomination. Officials said the new bigger denomination notes with different colours will be smaller in size in comparison to the notes currently in circulation. [Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from New Delhi,] more than 20 people were killed and 150 injured during anti-Muslim riots here last night [May 5], it was reported today. Unofficial estimates mentioned an even higher toll from the riots … in the north of the city. Today that section of New Delhi had the appearance of an occupied war zone, with patrolling, steel-helmeted police, bur­ned out houses, automobile wreckage and plundered stores. … Police said the clashes had begun with a quarrel between a Hindu and a Muslim during a game of chance.
