GUJRANWALA, March 13: Joint teams of the district administration and police on Monday arrested around 500 people, including kite sellers, while six others sustained injuries during kite flying in and around the city.

Reports said 300 people were arrested in Gujranwala, 50 in Kamoki, 40 in Ghakkhar Town and 60 in Wazirabad and Sodara while flying kites at roof-tops of their houses.

Raiding parties, headed by the deputy district officers (revenue) and resident magistrates, arrested the violators. The Wazirabad DDO (revenue) fined Rs5,000 each to a dozen people of Ghakkhar Town while many others were sent to jail following registration of cases against them.

Similarly, the city courts released as many as 45 under-aged on submitting surety bonds worth Rs20,000 each while about 255 were sent to jail on judicial remand.

Six people were injured in Wazirabad and Sodara in Basant-related incidents.

UBL employees: Hundreds of United Bank employees on Monday staged a demonstration to pressure administration for acceptance of their demands, including raise in their salary package.

The employees, who gathered in front of the bank’s regional office, were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against anti-labour laws. They also chanted slogans against bank administration.

The union leaders complained that there was a disparity in the salaries of employees having equal qualification and experience, alleging that those having affiliation with administration were being paid more.

They demanded that the employees’ salaries be revised after every two years as they had not been given any pay raise since 2001. They also sought an increase in the retired employees’ pension.
