THIS is with reference to the editorial ‘Shameful veto’ (Feb 22). In fact, a veto in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) upholds the old maxim ‘might is right’, signifying that the desire of any one permanent UNSC member carries more value than the collective wisdom of the UN General Assembly.

What is going on in Gaza is sheer injustice, barbarism and blatant violation of the UN charters and international laws. To massacre innocent civilians in tented shelters, hospitals, schools, mosques, apartments and even in UN shelters, can never be condoned and described as Israel’s right to self-defence. These genocidal acts in Gaza are heinous war crimes, and they definitely invoke the relevant international laws meant to punish the oppressor.

To support Israel in carrying out its relentless bombing of children and women and blockade of food, water and medicines is a grave travesty of justice. The world opinion is absolutely against Israel, as hundreds of thousands of people across the world, including those in the United States, irrespective of colour, religion and nationality, have demons-trated time and again, and demanded an immediate ceasefire.

What the Zionist Israel wants in Gaza and the West Bank is to exterminate all Palestinians and occupy their land to establish Jewish settlements there. However, today’s civilised world will never allow it to stage a replica of the Holocaust in Gaza.
