Have you ever wondered how you can find positivity around yourself when there is nothing but darkness? Everything may seem dull and dark, but you have some light within you, which helps you go around, making it easier to find your way. Or ever wondered how to handle it when you’re feeling depressed or are in a bad mood?

Well, the answer to all that is practicing gratitude. Gratitude practice is a positive, healthy and cost-free way to overcome any negativity that you may be feeling inside. Gratitude is an emotion similar to appreciation. Simply put, practicing gratitude means being thankful, acknowledging all that you have and making your life feel worthy of living.

However, the concept of gratitude has changed with time. For many people, having possessions and being well is a standard rather than a valued personal ‘blessing’. Unfortunately, gratitude has, for many, been replaced by disappointment, anger and resentment when these expected ‘blessings’ either do not appear or they disappear.

It is something every individual should consider as an important aspect of their everyday life, since practicing gratitude can make your life easier and positive in every possible way. There are different ways through which you can practice gratitude, such as those mentioned below.

Physical acts of service

You can start practicing gratitude by doing acts of service publicly, which involve your physical self. Trying to help others in some basic ways might help you understand that you have so many blessings and luxuries of life since childhood, without even asking for them. This way, a sense of thankfulness and gratitude might awake within yourself.

Financial giving

Giving out money as a form of charity may make you realise how blessed you are to have some money to spare, while others don’t even have enough for their basic needs. This is an easy and great way to not only utilise your money in a good and positive manner, but also learn how fulfilling it is to be of help to others.

This will also make you thankful for what you have and that you are in the position of a giver and not the one in need. Moreover, the happiness and containment one gets on being able to help others and being a source of comfort for them, can’t be had by any other act.

Expressing gratitude through writing

One of the best and most reliable ways of reflecting on all the good in your life and being grateful for it is by starting a gratitude journal. Start or end your day by writing down all the things in your life for which you are grateful.

This act may also come in handy when you’re feeling low at any point in life. By just going through your ‘gratitude journal’ and recalling all the things you have in life that are worthy of being thankful for but are taken for granted, your sad thoughts will instantly go away.

These are a few simple, yet effective, ways of projecting gratitude in your daily life. Though these might seem like tough tasks at first, trust me, once started, it will all feel like a part of life. The happiness, thankfulness and all other good feelings arising within you when you start practicing gratitude are unmatched. Published in Dawn, Young World, February 24th, 2024
