KARACHI, Feb 24: The City Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal, has said that landfill sites were being privatized for better working of solid waste management. He stated this during the inspection of sanitation and garbage lifting work in Khudadad Colony in Jamshed Town on Thursday night.

The nazim said the decision for privatizing garbage lifting and carrying out sweeping work during night hours was taken after great consideration and it would be implemented in letter and spirit.

Mustafa Kamal said the city couldn’t be cleaned during daytime. Due to large scale movement of vehicles and people, the sanitary staff couldn’t work in a better way, he added.

Under the new system, the city nazim said that the sanitary staff would rest the whole day and carry out sanitation work during the night. Besides, garbage vehicles can also move easily to landfill sites during night hours, he added.

The city nazim apprehended that some problems may be encountered in the new system but these would be overcome gradually. He asked the town administration to take steps for opening office during night hours and also to set up a section, which may monitor the entire system of the solid waste management and prepare report thereof.

The city nazim directed the DO Solid Waste Management to immediately get lights installed on the roads heading to landfill sites including the Jam Chakro site.—APP
