PALESTINIAN CRISIS: Other than taking out rallies in support of Palestinians, there is precious little, if anything, that Pakistan has done so far in the face of the grave crisis unfolding in the heart of the Middle East. Rallies are being taken out in several countries in the West as well; sometimes even bigger than what we have managed. At the government level, Islamabad is just about as good, or bad, as is, say, Washington or London. Whatever happened to our historical public stance related to Palestine and Palestinians? Israel is continuing to bomb and kill in utter disregard of international laws related to warfare. What we are watching is not a war; it is pure and simple genocide. The least we can do both at government and social levels is to be active participants of the Boycott, Divest- ment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

TRANSPORT FARES: People in Sindh, especially in rural areas, have been yearning for a decent and affordable transport service for years, but no such service has ever been provided by the government. Making the most of such an opportunity, private transporters charge whimsical fares from those who cannot afford it. The government should formulate a sound policy that may at least attempt to save passengers from the monopoly of the transport mafia.

The relevant authorities should pay attention to this matter on a priority basis.

NURSING CARE: This is with reference to the letter ‘Negative depiction of nurses in plays’ (Oct 2). I fully agree with the views expressed. Nursing is one of the noblest professions in the world. Doctors see an inpatient for hardly 5-10 minutes, while the rest of the treatment is executed by the nurses. We should realise that nurses represent the backbone of the healthcare delivery system. I wholeheartedly agree with the view that the national media needs to play a positive role by depicting nurses in a positive light.
