KARACHI: Security has been beefed up in and outside the University of Karachi after armed muggers harassed several female students near the Silver Jubilee Gate on main University Road on Tuesday evening, officials said on Wednesday.

Karachi University Teachers Society (Kuts) Vice President Dr Ghufran Alam said that on Tuesday evening around 10 female students of the KU’s evening programme were waiting for a bus at the main gate when two armed muggers attempted to loot and harass them. The girls ran for shelter and saved themselves while the criminals fled, he added.

Confirming the incident, Mobina Town SHO Abdul Sattar Magsi said that armed robbers tried to loot the girls.

SSP-East Syed Irfan Bahadur said that three senior police officers visited the spot and met with KU officials.

He said that they were looking into the incident but so far, no one had come forward to lodge a formal complaint. He said the police traced father of one of the girls and sought some information regarding the incident.

The Kuts official said that the teachers’ body had taken up the issue with the vice chancellor, who had asked the Rangers and police to increase patrolling on main University Road to provide a safe environment to female students, teachers and employees as well.
