OKARA: The post-mortem on the bodies of a woman and her two minor daughters who had died of poison at Basirpur was done at Tehsil Headquarter (THQ) Hospital Depalpur on Monday.

Nasim Bibi had strained relations with her husband, Muhammad Ramzan, a resident of Mohallah Ahmad Shah of Basirpur. She allegedly consumed poisonous pills after quarrelling with her husband and made her daughters, Tayyaba (7) and Rizwana (4), take pills too. As their condition deteriorated, they were shifted to a local hospital where they died.

District Police Officer (DPO) Mansoor Aman had nominated Basirpur Police Station SHO Tahir Waheed Jutt to conduct an inquiry and in spite of the family reluctance, the post-mortem on the bodies was done. The samples were sent for analysis at the Chemical Laboratory in Lahore.

Later, the bodies were handed over to the family of Nasim who refused to register a case.

CONFERENCE: The 1st International Conference on Advanced Nano Materials being organised by the University of Okara’s Centre for Nanoscience kicked off with a grand opening ceremony.

A number of scientists and researchers from Pakistan and abroad presented their research papers on the latest trends in various branches of nanoscience.

The foreign scholars attending the conference include Prof Dr Malek Mazaa, Dr Katlego Makgopa, Prof Kwena D. Modibane and Dr Christopher Mtshali. The ceremony started with the introduction given by Dr Shehla Honey, the director of the Centre for Nanoscience at UO and the conference chair. She highlighted the objectives of the conference.

“This conference is meant to bring together a galaxy of global scientists to discuss the future of the research on nanomaterials and how this research can contribute to the well-being of humankind,” she said.

Prof Dr Muhammad Wajid of the UO, in his welcome note, thanked all the guests and participants in the conference. He vowed to extend the available resources and support for the scientific activities.

Chief guest Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Engineering & Technology Multan Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Kamran explained the significance of collaboration among physics, nanoscience and engineering for the betterment of humanity.

Prof Dr Saeed Ahmad Buzdar from the Islamia University of Bahawalpur and Prof Dr Javed Ahmad from Bahauddin Zakariya University discussed the need for collaboration for effective research and physics and its applications respectively. On the sidelines of the conference, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for research and academic collaborations was inked by Prof Wajid and Prof Kamran.
