THE critical condition of the flyover across Nagan Chowrangi in Karachi is alarming and deserves immediate attention of the relevant authorities. The bridge is a vital link that connects various city areas and is used by millions of commuters every single day.

Many of these commuters have recently experienced a sort of ‘wave’ in the bridge whenever there is a loaded truck or some other heavy traffic moving across. The ‘shakes’ and ‘jumps’ are scary and people have already started taking other routes for their daily commute in order to avoid the bridge.

Before someone describes it as unnecessary fuss, let me point out that the bridge has been there for a long time, and the current ‘waves’, ‘shakes’ and ‘jumps’ are way beyond the normal jerks that commuters feel on flyovers across the city.

One inspection team has already visited the site and, at least while talking to the area people, conceded that a major accident may occur. Nothing has happened since then, though.

The relevant authorities should have another inspection done, and get the problem fixed urgently so that people may commute with due peace of mind.
