l CDA appreciates citizens’ cooperation; commissioner Rawalpindi announces one month’s additional salary for sanitary workers
ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) collected and disposed of offal and remains of around 130,000 sacrificial animals weighing 2,278 tonnes during the three days of Eidul Azha.
On the other hand, 12,300 tonnes of offal and waste produced in Rawalpindi was also disposed of outside the garrison city.
On the directions of CDA Chairman Noorul Amin Mengal, the city was divided into four zones to collect and disposed of the offal, entrails and other waste material.
According to a statement, on the first day of the Eid, offal of more than 94,000 sacrificial animals were collected. It said 52,000 were of large animals such as bulls and camels and 42,000 were of small animals such as goats and sheep. The overall weight of the waste was over 1,676 tonnes.
On the second day, offal of over 31,000 animals were collected of which 18,000 were large animals and 13,000 small ones. The weight of the second day’s collection was 542 tonnes.
On the third day, around 4,000 offal were collected of which 26,00 were small and 1,400 large animals. The weight of the waste was 60 tonnes.
Officials and officers of the Sanitation Directorate participated in the cleanliness operation. Furthermore, cooperation of the residents of the city was among the key factors which made the operation a success.
According to an action plan, 97 ditches and trenches were dug up at 45 locations of the city, where the remains and offal of sacrificial animals were disposed of.
Moreover, two emergency cells were also established to address the complaints of citizens.
Leaves of the entire staff of the directorate were cancelled who served in the field on an emergency basis. Thousands of sanitary workers, including sweepers, supervisory staff, contractor’s staff and officers actively participated in the cleanliness drive. Each and every street of the sectors was cleaned by the CDA workers, the statement added.
Moreover, hundreds of vehicles, including tractors with trolleys, trucks and compactors, were used and the continued round the clock. Lime powder was also sprinkled and applied on the surroundings of places where sacrifices took place, around ditches and garbage trolleys.
The CDA appreciated the cooperation of the residents particularly the role of the media which remained a motivational factor due to which the cleanliness operation remained successful.
Rawalpindi
A total of 12,300 tonnes of offal produced in the three days of Eidul Azha in the garrison city was disposed of by the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company and the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board outside the city.
Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chattha announced one month’s additional salary for the sanitary workers for their good work during the Eid days.
The RWMC completed the Eid cleanliness operation and disposed of more than 9,000 tonnes of sacrificial animals from Rawalpindi and its tehsils in three days, resolving all the 650 complaints received during the period.
Punjab Caretaker Minister for Primary Health and Population Welfare Dr Jamal Nasir, Commissioner Chattha, Deputy Commissioner Dr Hassan Waqar Cheema and RWMC Chief Executive Officer Rana Sajid Safdar visited the city and inspected the cleanliness.
RWMC spokesman Nasir Mir said 4,052 workers and 463 vehicles took part in the clean-up operation, adding 200,000 bags were distributed among the citizens for dumping the garbage.
He said the cleanliness operation was completed by Asr prayers on Saturday under supervision of the commissioner.
The staff continuously worked for 72 hours in different shifts. He also appreciated the cleaning operation of the RWMC that was started one day before Eid and continued uninterrupted till the third day.
He said 17 permanent and 43 mobile transfer stations were set up in the city and tehsils which were demolished as soon as the Eid cleanliness operation was completed.
On Saturday, RWMC officials visited different areas to participate in the operation.
In 12 special Eid awareness camps of the RWMC, pamphlets along with waste bags and complaint numbers were distributed among the citizens.
Meanwhile, Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) said it lifted 3,300 tonnes of animal waste during three days of Eidul Azha.
Cantonment Executive Officer Imran Gulzar said 750 sanitary workers took part in the cleanliness drive and shifted the animal waste from residential areas to the landfill site on Chakri Road.
He said 650 complaints were received and all problems of the residents were solved within a few hours.
He visited different areas on Saturday afternoon to check whether the cleanliness operation had been conducted successfully or not.
He expressed satisfaction over the work done by the sanitary workers and appreciated their performance. He also checked the complaints received by the RCB during the three days.
