LAHORE: A discussion on National Integration at the Lahore Garrison University on Saturday highlighted the transformative power of social media in giving voice to individuals from diverse backgrounds, enabling them to share their opinions and experiences with a global audience.

Speaking to the media assembly on national integration, LGU Vice Chancellor retired Maj-Gen Shahzad Sikandar said unprecedented level of freedom of expression had provided an avenue for marginalised voices to be heard, challenging traditional power dynamics and fostering a more inclusive public discourse.

Dr Bushra Hameed of the University of the Punjab emphasized that freedom of expression should be viewed as a means to an end rather than an end in itself. She said the purpose of freedom of expression, particularly in the realm of media, should be centred around fostering national unity and cohesion.

LGU media studies head of the department Dr Amir Bajwa highlighted the significance of utilising the freedom of expression responsibly.

Journalists Mujeebur Rehman Shami and Ehtesham Amiruddin, poet Farhat Abbas and dramatist Mansoor Ashraf also participated in the discussion.
