PROJECT DELAY

PROJECT DELAY: The Sindh Energy Department (SED) had announced the installation of solar energy systems in government hospitals, including Civil Hospital, Naushahro Feroze, with assistance from the World Bank.

About two years ago, a local private company had installed a 448.56kw solar plates, but since then nothing has happened beyond that. The project has not been inaugurated as yet and hundreds of solar plates installed are of no use as they cannot generate energy on their own. I have personally got in touch from time to time with SED and the private company in this regard, but no one has said anything worthwhile ever. The provincial government should take notice of the uncertainty surrounding the project.

GAS SUPPLY: For well over a month now, there is some digging work going on in almost all streets and lanes to install rainwater drains in Karachi’s DHA phase VI area. This is a welcome step, but the disconnection of natural gas supply to the entire area is seriously bothersome. The residents have approached all the relevant authorities, but there is nothing except shifting of responsibility from one agency to the other. A complaint filed on March 9 (No 9702002364) is still unattended.

MENACE OF DRUGS: Dera Ghazi Khan is the only city that connects all the provinces of Pakistan, and thus is a major route for the movement of goods across the country. This strategically located district is in the grip of drug mafia. Teenagers, mostly illiterate, are seen selling drugs on city streets. The unemployed youth find this an easy source of earning backed by the powerful mafia which also gives them a bit of adrenalin rush. Police and other law-enforcement agencies do not show any interest in making any arrests. The Anti-Narcotics Force does not even have a visible presence in the city.
