Waste management

Published January 31, 2023

KARACHI is a city with high population density. Therefore, the issue of solid waste management is critical. The population of the city is increasing rapidly which poses several challenges, including shortage of space for solid waste. Most of the existing landfills have reached their capacity already.

Solid waste management refers to the collection, treatment and disposal procedure for solid waste. While solid waste management is very important, it is, unfortunately, not a priority in Pakistan, and the relevant authorities are unable to deal with the issue effectively.

The government needs to establish a strong solid waste management system. A comprehensive plan should be designed to identify the existing problems and make necessary arrangements for their resolution.

The government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) active in the field should together launch awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of proper waste management. As responsible citizens, we all should raise our voice against the menace of solid waste lying around open drains and streets which is converting the beautiful city into an eyesore, and putting the citizens at the risk of acquiring a number of diseases. The authorities concerned should take immediate steps to address the issue.
