PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police on Wednesday signed an agreement with a private company to launch a safe city project with a view to combating terrorism and curbing street crime through use of modern technology.

According to a statement issued from the Central Police Office, 915 points have been identified to be covered under the project. The project envisages laying a 1,000-kilometre optic fibre cable and installing 25 Long-Term Evolution (LTE) towers. The project also includes surveillance, integrated emergency response, intelligent traffic management system and electronic evidence collection.

A third KP police integrated command control and communication centre would be established at the Sharqi police station under the project, whose first phase would be started in Hayatabad.

Speaking at the agreement signing ceremony, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Moazzam Jah Ansari said with the launch of the safe city project, Peshawar would see a new era of latest security apparatus.

“With the installation of high resolution close-circuit television cameras, every point will come under preview of the police and it will not be possible for violators to escape,” he said.

He said the project was aimed at making the urban areas of Peshawar safe and secure through technology driven efforts.
