PESHAWAR: Two suspected robbers were killed and one was injured in exchange of fire with police in Mattani on the outskirts of provincial capital on Wednesday.

A police statement said that both the robbers belonged to the ‘notorious Shakir Islam gang’ which was operating in the area and were killed in an encounter in the Ghaziabad area of Mattani.

The police said that the accused identified as Shakir Islam and Hamza were at their hideout in the area after looting vehicles on the Kohat Road the night before when a police party raided the premises.

The statement said that the robbers lobbed a hand grenade at the raiding cops and also opened fire. It said that the Badbher DSP Sardar Hussain received a bullet in his bulletproof vest and escaped unhurt.

The police said that the outlaws were killed in exchange of fire with cops while one of their accomplices identified as Niaz was wounded. A fourth accomplice Hamad was caught while fleeing the scene.

Two other outlaws escaped from the scene and the police were searching for them.

According to the police, the accused were wanted in several cases of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and robbery.
