UNIVERSITY ROAD

UNIVERSITY ROAD: The University Road in Karachi is in a horrible condition for long. The recent rains should not be blamed for the condition; it only made an already bad condition worse. To provide further ‘relief’ to the common man, the government has started the Red Line mass transit project, reducing the road to half its width. Constables of traffic police are nothing more than silent spectators as the tanker mafia continues to play havoc in the area. Those at the helm of city’s affairs should take immediate action and get the road repaired.

NOT A DROP: Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink, goes the famous line in Coleridge’s poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. It truly depicts the sufferings of the people of Karachi. This is because of the unbridled tanker mafia that is responsible for the water woes in the city. It is strong enough to influence and have its way with the relevant authorities. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) should wake up to its responsibility.

GAMBAT STATION: Pir Abdul Qadir Shah Jeelani Institute of Medical Sciences is situated close to the Gambat railway station. Several trains pass through the station, but the only train that stops there is Awam Express whose staff charges more money from the students and treats them badly. The station is also in a poor condition. The department concerned should do the needful.

FLAWED CURRICULUM: It is rather unfortunate that the curriculum meant for various tiers of education in Sindh does not include subjects like economics, computer science and business-related courses. It is like discouraging students from becoming accountants, businessmen, computer scientists. The curriculum really needs to change. Otherwise, it will keep producing depressed doctors, half-hearted engineers and demotivated teachers.
