A car dealer and a suspected robber were shot dead by alleged muggers during a robbery near Karachi’s Jamshed Road on Tuesday, the police said.

Jamshed Quarters Station House Officer (SHO) Chaudhry Azam told Dawn.com that the victim, 30-year-old Ahmed Raza, owned a spare parts shop near Jail Chowrangi selling Japanese goods.

Earlier today, he was on his way to Jahangir Park to collect a payment when four robbers intercepted his car and tried to snatch cash from him, the officer said.

As he put up resistance, the robbers opened fire at him and shot him in the chest and leg, Azam said. He added that Raza was taken to a private hospital where he succumbed to his wounds during treatment.

The SHO said one suspect identified as Shahid Husain, 34, was also killed by the firing from his accomplices.

The suspect’s body was moved to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi where police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said two bullets had hit him in the head and thigh.

Today’s death is the latest in a spate of murders after citizens showed resistance to robbers with a young man being killed on Monday and three dead and five injured in different parts of the city on Sunday.

At a press conference today, Karachi Additional Inspector General of Police (AGP) Javed Odho admitted that there was an upsurge in the crimes in the city. However, he assured that the police were in proactive mode.

Odho further opined that crimes could be controlled when the citizens and the law enforcers joined hands.
