KARACHI: Oil and Gas Development Company Ltd (OGDC) said on Wednesday the joint venture of Guddu Block — in which the company is an operator with a 70 per cent stake — has discovered gas in an exploratory well called Umair South East-1 in Ghotki district of Sindh.

A regulatory filing said Umair South East-1 was spudded in on May 9 to test the hydrocarbon potential of Pirkoh formation and Habib Rahi Limestone (HRL), it said.

“Based on the results of wireline logs interpretation, successful drill stem test-1 in HRL has tested 1.63 million standard cubic feet per day of gas,” it said.

Besides OGDC, the joint venture of Guddu Block consists of SPUD Energy PTY Ltd (13.5pc), IPR Transoil Corporation (11.5pc) and Government Holdings Ltd (5pc).

“The discovery of Umair South East-1 is the result of aggressive exploration strategy adopted by Guddu Joint Venture Partners. It has opened a new avenue and will positively contribute to mitigating the energy demand and supply gap from indigenous resources,” the company said.
