GILGIT: A Gilgit city beautification project was launched here on Tuesday.

Talking to mediapersons after inauguration of the project, GB chief secretary Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani said federal and regional governments had launched several projects to protect the natural environment from degradation.

Mr Wani stressed the need for saving the glaciers from fast melting. He said an early warning system was being installed in the region.

Earlier, the Gilgit city beautification project was inaugurated by orphan children during a ceremony held in the city park.

Additional chief secretary Aziz Ahmed Jamali, home secretary Iqbal Hussain Khan, Inspector General of Police Mohammad Saeed Wazir, information secretary Momin Jan, secretary water and power Zafar Waqar Taj, commissioner Gilgit division Mir Waqar Ahmed and a number of orphan children attended the ceremony.

The chief secretary said orphan children would be provided all the facilities to enable them to become successful citizens.
