DHAKA: Injury-hit Bangladesh received a fresh blow on Friday when off-spinner Nayeem Hasan was ruled out of the second Test against Sri Lanka with a finger injury.

The second Test in the two-Test series starts at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Monday.

“Nayeem had a contusion of the right middle finger while batting and fielding in the first Test,” said Bangladesh national team physio Bayzidul Islam in a statement.

“An X-ray after the match confirmed an oblique fracture on the tip of the middle finger. He will miss the second Test. We will take specialist opinion before planning his rehab and recovery,” he added.

Nayeem played a key part in the drawn first Test in Chittagong, which ended on Thursday.

He claimed 6-105 to help Bangladesh bowl out Sri Lanka for 397 runs in the first innings after making a comeback to the side.

Bangladesh will also miss the service of pace bowler Shoriful Islam in the second Test because of injury.

Bangladesh are already without Test regulars Mehidy Hasan and Taskin Ahmed in the series due to injury.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan recovered from Covid-19 infection to be included in the first Test squad at the last minute.

The hosts have opted not to take any replacement for Shoriful while a replacement for Nayeem has yet to be announced.
