PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority officials on Friday seized over 4,500 dead chickens in Peshawar markets and arrested the vendors.

According to a statement issued here, the authority’s director general Shahrukh Ali Khan took the action on a tip-off near the Charsadda Road, and got arrested four people and sealed three shops.

The officials found the owners of shops busy in slaughtering the dead chickens for supply to various hotels and food outlets.

The statement said investigation was underway in order to award punishment to the people involved in the illegal business.

The food safety team discarded the dead chicken.

The statement said the food authority officials also tested milk and beverages samples in Matta and Babuzai areas of Swat through a mobile testing laboratory, and discarded over 100 litres of adulterated and low-fat milk from various dairy shops.

Similarly, the teams also tested edible oil samples in various hotels, and discarded substandard and rancid oil during inspection. Food outlets, including hotels, dairy shops, general stores and chips factories were also inspected on Nowshera Road and in the main Charsadda city.

During the inspection, banned energy drinks were recovered from a number of shops, and the owners were fined. The actions were taken to ensure provision of safe and nutritious food to people, the statement said.
