MEDICAL STUDIES: With a new government in place, the controversy over the possible restoration of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) is only adding to the frustration of medical students preparing for medical and dental college admission test (MDCAT). At a time when the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) has already published the required syllabus, PMDC restoration will cause utter confusion. Such demands shall wait till the MDCAT is over.

CITIZENS’ PORTAL: The Citizens’ Portal initiated by the previous government was a good step and one hopes the new government will not do away with it. In fact, efforts should be made to improve its performance and delivery ratio. A few of my complaints that I had lodged in February are yet to be solved. The government should look into such delays.

GREAT INITIATIVE: Many countries in the Muslim world regularly issue commemorative postal stamps on to mark the occasions like Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha. The United States was the first non-Muslim country to issue an Eid Mubarak stamp in 2011. This year, Canada and New Zealand also unveiled such commemorative stamps. We should appreciate these governments for taking initiatives to promote interfaith harmony. I hope other countries will follow suit as a step towards eliminating Islamophobia.

COURT LIVE-STREAM: The Islamabad High Court has recently decided to live-stream its judicial proceedings and ran a trial in this regard last month. It is a welcome decision and will strengthen public’s confidence in our courts. At present, the judiciary is accustomed to talking through its decisions through third-party interlocutors, such as court reporters, to defend itself. However, for the sake of transparency and openness, it is about time the judiciary and the public were directly linked.
