SELECTION CRITERIA: The appointment criteria of the Higher Education Commission should not be limited to the academic qualifications of professors. Some teachers have degrees and papers, but they do not have pedagogical skills, causing traumatic conditions for students who happen to be at the receiving end, and have to put up with their incompetence. The least a teacher can do is not to insult students and discuss their weaknesses before others. Asking students to evaluate their teacher could be a good idea in this regard.

CAPITAL ROADS: This refers to the letter ‘The rationale behind naming capital roads’ (Feb 24). The cabinet must do some serious research on eminent leaders of the Pakistan Movement, and name the new roads of the capital after them. Liaquat Ali Khan and Raja Mahmudabad who worked tirelessly with the Quaid are fine examples to start the process with. They deserve to be honoured and remembered.

NEW WRITERS: Literature seems to be thriving across the world except in Pakistan as there is no good platform for aspiring writers to get their work published due to discouragement from publishing houses. As a result, writers resort to self-publication. I recently published my English poetry book on my own which received a lot of praise from the readers but earned no profit for me. The social attitude is disastrous, and the government should step in to support the aspiring writers get their work published.

MOB LYNCHING: The recent surge in incidents of mob lynching is extremely menacing and upsetting, and, if left unchecked, can take many innocent lives and will consequently tear the social fabric apart. A comprehensive effort by the stakeholders, including sociologists, to study the causes is needed that may suggest changes in the curriculum to address the issue. Otherwise, we will be left isolated in the modern world.
