HYDERABAD, Nov 29: Prof Liaquat Aziz was elected secretary general of the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association in the annual election of the association held at the Government Muslim Science College here on Tuesday.

Mr Aziz received 179 votes and his rival, Prof Ahmad Ali Jamali, received 17 votes.

Prof Taj Joyo was elected the information secretary who bagged 178 votes. His rival candidate, Prof Anwar Sagar Kandhro, received 17 votes.

Other office-bearers were elected unopposed.

Presidents and general secretaries of 232 colleges of Karachi, Sukkur and Hyderabad regions form the electoral college.

Meanwhile, the 15th annual convention of the association was held under the chairmanship of Prof Manzoor Hussain Chishti.

The convention adopted 46 resolutions.

It demanded that six per cent of the GDP should be earmarked for education and a proposal to ban teachers’ associations should be dropped.

It opposed privatization of educational institutions.
