LAHORE: The Government College University (GCU) students on Tuesday protested against the administration over thrashing of a student allegedly for sitting with a female classmate on the campus.

A video circulating on social media revealed that a student was being thrashed in front of other students outside the amphitheatre.

The video showed that two people, proctor and deputy proctor were dragging a student and one of them was also thrashing him.

A large number of students gathered at the open air amphitheatre and launched the protest. The students were chanting slogans against the administration and also demanded action against the proctors.

The students also claimed that the matter was reported to the administration several times but no action was taken.

Meanwhile, the new and old Ravians also took to the twitter and condemned the thrashing of the student.

One of the students told Dawn that the proctor and deputy proctor approached the male and female student and asked them why they were sitting together.

A student tweeted the video saying, “A student was beaten up at GCU for allegedly not showing his ID card and the current administration has turned the campus into a jail. Action must be taken against the person beating the student.”

Another student tweeted, “The current administration of GCU has started moral policing of students. This is extremely shameful behaviour to physically abuse and assault university students.”

A former student tweeted, “Have been seeing disturbing videos from GCU for the past many days. Gcu was one of the most progressive campuses only a few years ago with its students leading the student movement for a better education system. Wonder why it is so actively being turned into a policed space?”

GCU vice chancellor Prof Dr Asghar Zaidi told Dawn that a committee was constituted to investigate the matter and strict action would be taken if the proctor and deputy proctor were found guilty. He said he would investigate why the incident took place and would also fix the responsibility.

The VC tweeted: “We enjoy a peaceful campus (@gcuniversitylhr). Our teachers/Proctors are kind to our students and our students in turn respect their teachers, follow rules. A video is used, with a propaganda commentary; we’re investigating what actually happened; will take the most appropriate action.”
